Quartz is a mineral that is crystalized and composed of silica. It is hard, tough, and the 2nd most abundant mineral in our Earth’s continental crust after feldspar. But how are quartz counters or floors made?
Quartz is an engineered stone with hydrous silica or crystalline quartz as essential ingredients, mixed with resinous ingredients (sometimes colorants) to accentuate veining and/or ultraviolet light repellent chemicals. Quartz counters and floors are all estimated 90% of granite, marble, ceramics, glass, and/or mirrors may be crushed and mixed with resin! Man-made quartz products may only be about 70% to 80% pure mineral quartz, while the remainder is polyester resin, styrene, and pigments, and the above, declaring the title of ‘pure, natural mineral’ to be fictitious.
Who monitors the percentage of these probable ingredients? The manufacturer only. Per my interpretation of the website, as of recently NO regulations, NO standards, NO oversight. As a newly emerging favorite of the stone industry, Quartzite is appealing for the eco-conscious consumer because it’s created by nature and contains naturally occurring components only.
Quartzite, however, is a naturally occurring stone that contains 90 to 99% quartz and bound by silica. As a metamorphized stone, it is formed by extreme heat and pressure caused by tectonic forces. It’s a tough stone that is a little more resistant to heat and acid etching by comparison to quartz.
