Natural Stone- Adaptable With Your Changing Tastes and Trends

Many consumers are unaware that their highly polished marble, granite, travertine, or limestone surfaces can be refinished to a different luster. If you are changing your home, that high gloss white marble floor can be honed to a flat finish to better represent your new style.

From countertops to floors, honing your material can change the entire look of a room. What affect will you get from honing your stone? Here are a few things to expect:

1. Bold dark colors will become lighter and soften – a black stone, for example, in high gloss is midnight black. The same material with a honed finish will become off-black or even charcoal.

2. Light reflects in a more diffuse way, softening the overall appearance of your stone: If you can see your reflection in the surface of the stone, after honing, you will only see a fuzzy version.

High gloss finishes are a little more resistant to staining, but not etches (etches appear more distinctly).  Therefore, it is recommended to seal the honed flooring thoroughly to minimize absorption of any foreign substances or spills.

It is always recommended to flatten the floor tiles when honing, (known as “lippage removal”). This provides for the most uniform and even result in addition to the added benefit of smoothing the floor.

The honed finish may also be reversed – from low luster to a polished finish.

This versatility is an edge above other materials – Ceramic, porcelain, and engineered stone are not meant to be resurfaced and cannot truly be polished or honed without damaging the material.
